HIL auction: Sardar bags $58,000; Fuerste breaks $100k barrier

NEW DELHI: India men's team captain Sardar Singh was purchased by Japyee Punjab Warriors for USD 58,000 from his base price of USD 20,000 on Friday in the Hockey India League 2015 auctions, but the biggest draw in of the morning were Germany's Florian Fuchs, who was picked for USD 96,000 by Dabang Mumbai and Mortiz Fuerste, picked by Kalinga Lancers for USD 105,000 - the highest ever in HIL auctions.

After a rather slow start to the auctions that saw only two players from lot one being picked, Sardar's name - the first on lot two - created a buzz among the franchises with Uttar Pradesh Wizards and Punjab going head to head for the star 29-year-old midfielder. His price of USD 58,000, however, was less than the amount he garnered in the inaugural edition. Sarar was sold for USD 78,000 to Delhi Waveriders in 2012 before the franchise released him this year.
But it was the 23-year-old and FIH Young Player of the Year Fuchs, regarded as one of the sport's most lethal strikers, who was on the radar of every franchise and he quickly went past Sardar's price with UP Wizards, Mumbai and Kalinga Lancers bidding vigorously. Once defending HIL champions Kalinga opted out it was left to Delhi and Mumbai to fight it out, and in the end Mumbai picked him up for a hefty price of USD 96,000. Fuchs' Germany team-mate Fuerste, an Olympic gold medallist, bagged a hefty amount of USD 105,00 from a base price of USD 30,000 with Waveriders, Wizards and Dabang Mumbai vying for the his services, but Lancers pulled off a late heist with their record bid.
During the 2012 auctions, Fuerste was acquired by Ranchi Rhinos for USD 75,000 and went on to captain the team.
